What's New at MarineBio?

MarineBio is working hard to bring you even more information as part of our evolving online tribute to all Ocean life. We are adding marine species to the database as fast as we can. We're working on bringing new information to help you get involved in ocean conservation, or explore dynamic research and/or daily marine life news. Join the MarineBio Society committed to the exploration of the ocean and conservation of our environment and all marine life.

The following is a short summary of the latest happenings at MarineBio:

Do you know the number one thing you can do to protect the ocean?

Learn! Learn all you can about the threats facing the ocean and marine life. First and foremeost, Global warming (Climate Change/Abrupt Climate Change) is the number one threat not only to marine life but to all of our ways of life as well. The debate is over. It is happening. Only the magnitude and details, such as whether we've reached a tipping point yet, remain. Now is the time to act. To learn all about Global Warming/Climate Change, what it really is, what very likely will happen, and what we can/should really do about it, you should see these videos:

08/08 - Knopf publishers have donated copies of Richard Ellis' new book Tuna: A Love Story, which we are giving away with a donation of $50 or more. We're continuing to offer the dive almanac to new members who join at $15 or more. The wonderful book Reef is also being offered to members who contribute $100 or more, but hurry because there are only a few left.

06/08 - MarineBio.org - now more navigable than ever! We conducted surveys to learn your thoughts about MarineBio.org and to see what we could do to improve it. The answers you provided gave us a lot of inspiration to re-design the site, and we think you'll like what you see. Based on your input, the site is now easier to navigate, better organized, and easier on the eyes. We hope you agree and would love your feedback. 02/08 - Indonesian Expeditions to Help Save the Pacific Leatherback (July 15th – July 25th and July 27 – August 06, 2008)

01/08 – MarineBio is working to bring more of the underwater realm to your desktop. Taking advantage of the internet video age, we are compiling a series of short (~10 minute) video clips of the underwater footage taken during our expeditions for our marine life video library. Enjoy!

12/07 – MarineBio is joining forces with Save our Leatherbacks Operation (SOLO), an organization in Texas that was established to help resolve threats to highly endangered Pacific leatherback sea turtles and one of their primary nesting beaches in Irian Jaya, Indonesia and beyond to protect the small number of leatherback turtle populations remaining. SOLO is hosting two expeditions to Irian Jaya to show people the nesting beaches of the leatherbacks as well as the beautiful and unspoiled reefs in the area.

11/07 – DK Publishing donated 15 copies of Reef — a “coffee-table” book of dazzling photos of reef life with descriptive captions and an entertaining narrative. The book also comes with a DVD of the stunning imagery seen in the book. We are now giving complimentary copies of the book to the next 15 people to donate $100 or more to MarineBio.

10/07 – MarineBio is the proud recipient of a Google grant! Google is generously donating thousands of dollars worth of Google AdWords to help MarineBio spread the word about marine conservation. Thanks Google!

04/07 – Simon Pulse books donated copies of In Her Shoes. An excellent career guide for young girls featuring an interview with marine biologist Nancy Knowlton. We are now giving complimentary copies of the book to people who donate $20 or more.

6/07 - MarineBio now offers support for frontline marine conservation efforts! We invite seagrass-roots marine conservation efforts from around the world to become part of the MarineBio community. We are offering administrative sponsorship and support to projects whose work supports our mission to share the wonders of the ocean realm to inspire education, research, and a sea ethic. 3/07 - MarineBio is now operating off new dedicated servers. Though this will significantly increase our operating costs, for which we would greatly appreciate donations, the dependability and stability of MarineBio and the Plankton Forums will be greatly enhanced.

2/07 - Sponsorship program launched for marine-related supporters to be clearly recognized throughout the MarineBio Network. Sponsors may visit our media kit page to browse potential benefits and sponsorship levels.

2/07 - MarineBio was again featured by BBC as one of the best sites on the web on their website and was also broadcast on BBC News.

1/07 - MarineBio's Director of Elasmobranchs, R. Aidan Martin, passed away unexpectedly in his home in Vancouver on February 13. This is a great loss to the shark research and conservation community. In his short time with MarineBio, he was an outstanding advisor and contributed greatly to our work. We will miss his devotion to sharks, wonderful sense of humor, and boundless energy and enthusiasm.
